NBCD Spotlight- Luis Enrique Funes

Where do you live?

I live in Mendoza, Argentina.

What do you do?

Currently, working in a company dedicated to telecommunications called
R-Link. I dedicate it mostly to the development of communication
drivers and AVL viewers(both Web and desktop) for the hardware
developed in the company, and I also keeping everything that has to do
with GIS. Major developed in JAVA (using NetBeans IDE) and PHP (I
particularly like using Notepad++ editor, and I'm fully migrating to
NetBeans).

Previously, I worked as a developer for a company fully dedicated to
regional projects GIS. Also, I like to investigate the problems that I encounter in my daily work, and write (to the extent that it allows me time off) solutions which I
discovered on my blog or where to find or channel for doing so.

Besides the lure of being able to help others, really helps me to me, because I'm quite upset to investigate the same things twice :)

Let me introduce you to Tushar Joshi, he lives in Nagpur, Maharashtra, India. I'm glad to give him spotlight, as he fully deserves it. Hi Tom,

Welcome to NetBeans Community Docs Program, we are glad to give you spotlight. I just have few questions to ask, I am sure everyone would enjoy this as much as you will do.

Where do you live?

Well, I live in St. Louis, Missouri, USA.

Varun:

Cool! So, what exactly do you do?

Tom:

I am a Principal Software Engineer for Object Computing, Inc. (http://www.ociweb.com/). Most of my work during the past three years has been based on the NetBeans Platform. I've used the platform as a foundation for several engineering applications at Boeing where I am currently consulting. So, those were your recent contributions. Now, tell me one thing, when did you first start using NetBeans?

Tom:

I tried it back in 2000 just after it was open sourced. But most of
the development I did on the time was on remote servers, so I
continued using vi and the UNIX shell for development for a few years.

I switched to Eclipse in 2003 and continued using it until I got
involved with the NetBeans Platform in 2005. When NetBeans 5.0 came out, I started using NetBeans IDE a lot because of the wonderful Matisse GUI editor and the very helpful support for building platform applications. Since major improvements in the editor and overall performance came out in NetBeans 6.0, I find it really is the only IDE I need.

Varun:

Finally, what do you like best about NetBeans?

Tom:

The one thing I like best is that I can install it and immediately start working. The features I need most, like the GUI builder and profiler, are built right in to the Java IDE. It's amazing how much they've packed into a 60MB download. In the rare case where I do need something extra, it's easily added from the plugin manager.

Who are you, where do you live?

I live in the Netherlands in a city named Tilburg. Tilburg has 200,000 citizens and is located in the nice and friendly southern region of the Netherlands. I am married to my beautiful wife and a proud dad of my precious 4-month old daughter.

What do you do?

I work for a company called Be Value as a Java architect. We do different project with different customers. Our main focus is on content and knowledge management. I am responsible for setting up a project, helping and mentoring project members and keep quality of our work high.

When did you first start using NetBeans?

I look at NetBeans a couple of years ago already. But back then we used JBuilder at the company I was working at. JBuilder was a good IDE at that time, so we had no reason to change.

Later I started to use Eclipse, because JBuilder got so much features, it really was getting slow. Eclipse on the other hand was 'lite' and fast. But as time continued I expanded my Eclipse environment with a lot of useful plugins, but this really slowed down Eclipse. And every time a new version of Eclipse was released I had to look for the plugins again installed them, it was just too much work for me.

So a couple of month ago I decided to give NetBeans a try. I had read about on blogs and it looked like a nice, fast IDE. And it is! I was really impressed by the rich feature set of NetBeans, and still I get good performance.

The plugin architecture makes it easy to stay up-to-date and to install plugins. I have tried to write some small extensions to the IDE and it turned out to be quite easy to do. The native support for Maven2 was for me the great surprise. How easy it is to work with Maven from the IDE, great stuff! And I can't wait for the next release to use the Groovy/Grails support of NetBeans.

What do you like best about NetBeans?

I always had my command prompt open to invoke build commands, like with Maven or ANT. But with NetBeans I don't need that anymore. I can invoke all the commands from within the IDE, without any difficult configurations. This is the first time I got this from an IDE (so
really the I from IDE is true).

The great support for Maven2 is something I really like. I could open all my Maven projects and work right away with the source code in NetBeans.

I also like the Tomcat integration. I have used a lot at my last project and especially the hot deployment of code. I only had to change my source files and hit the Refresh button in my web browser and I immediately saw the changes.

The extension mechanism of NetBeans is also something I like. I have not done much with it, but the little things I tried to do were easy. And finally I like the 'lite' feel of NetBeans. Although it has a lot of features, I don't see it in the performance. Menu's popup quickly, working with files is quick, it just feels good and not bloated and slow.

What do you do?

I am web/desktop developer, leader team development, technology web consultant, docs contributor in NetBeans, JUG Peru member, virtual classroom teacher at JUG Peru ... all about Java & some PHP, but always using NetBeans .

When did you first start using NetBeans?

Since 2nd version. When NetBeans just uncompress, no installers. The projects was like classpath using mount folder and mount jar options. Good times :)

What do you like best about NetBeans?

Well, NetBeans has all in one: C/C++, frameworks, PHP, Java Mobile, Java Desktop, Java EE, Ruby, UML, platform, etc. Allows to do any things with few clicks and code. And the NetBeans Community :-)

NetBeans Community Docs Spotight - Kunal Modi

Its time for yet another Spotlight, this time we head to India, Asia. He has been contributing since January, 2008 and has done some fabulous contributions, mainly tutorials. He's Kunal Modi, he lives in Mumbai, India. His contributions relate to NetBeans API's, which could be helpful while doing plugin development. Lets see what he has contributed till date;

What do you do?

I am a Computer Science student from Fr.Conceicao Rodrigues College of Engineering, Mumbai University,India and will be completing my graduation this month. I love coding and like to stay in touch with latest developments in technology. My interests lie in web development and plugin development for NetBeans.

When did you first start using NetBeans?

NetBeans was introduced to me in early 2007 by my mentor Prof.Rajesh Patkar. It was then when I got familiarize and interested in Java. I should admit that it was NetBeans which instilled the passion for Java Coding in me. 'Code for Freedom' organized by Sun Microsystems, India was a great incentive to work with NetBeans. And in the long run, NetBeans has evolved tremendously.

What do you like best about NetBeans?

I would like to answer this question as -

  1. It provides you an insight into the vastness and the richness of Java Technology while providing the support for development using Java and other programming languages.
  2. I like the extensibility architecture of NetBeans the most. The way the modules gel with each other amazes me. The module development support helps you plug your custom feature with ease.

  1. Its such an active and a vibrant community that your queries/doubts definitely get answered, discussed and solved.
  2. It may be the mailing lists, the blogs, the wiki, the Community Docs or the excellent tutorials, the answer is always there. This has proved a great forte for NetBeans.
  3. This has imbibed into me the qualities of self learning, exploring, sharing and inspired me to contribute back. I owe you NetBeans :)

What do you do?

I am a freelance programmer, consultant and instructor.

When did you first start using NetBeans?

It was 2 years ago, my friend asked me to write a software.
At that time my favorite programming was pascal (delphi) and
C++ (C++ Builder) but I decided to use NetBeans because it's free,
cross platform and ease of use.

What do you like best about NetBeans?

Some says NetBeans is slow and inefficient, but I don't think so.
Now NetBeans is getting faster and rich features.
Most of all NetBeans is free, ease of use and there are many
strong communities out there that can support users.

NetBeans Community Docs Spotlight - Jay Mahadeokar

Hello all,

Its time to give Spotlight again, this time we head to India after a long time! It was way back in December, that we had given spotlight to an Indian contributor. This time around, we encountered Jay Mahadeokar, who is from Nagpur, Maharashtra in India! He's been doing great contributions, all being tutorials. Have a look;

What do you do?

I am a student, study Computer Science, in 3rd Year, at Shri Ramdeobaba Kamla Nehru Engineering College, Nagpur, India. I like coding and exploring new technologies.I am an uncompromising Manchester United fan and in free time, I read novels, go out with friends, watch movies...

When did you first start using NetBeans?

I first started using NetBeans about four months ago. Before that I was into Microsoft .Net and Visual Studio (Although I knew very little about these technologies to be frank!). Mr Rohan Ranade, Sun MicroSystems, Banglore, had visited our campus in January and gave a three day seminar on NetBeans and other Sun Technologies. It was he who inspired me to migrate to java and NetBeans, and since then I have started exploring NetBeans and developed a strong liking for it!

What do you like best about NetBeans?

Frankly speaking, I am still a relative newcomer in this area, so me commenting on the plus-es and minus-es of this fantastic IDE, might not be very appropriate. But, still I would try to highlight the main factors that proved to be the catalyst in making me fall in love with NetBeans :-).

1. NetBeans can be considered to be the front runner when it comes to satisfying the notion "The only IDE you need"! And I say that not because it is the tag line of NetBeans. Just look at the range of support NetBeans has offers for software development and you will realize it for yourself.

2. Wide range of robust API are provided for everything that you can think of. Module development support, and platform application development support are my personal favourites!

3. Opportunities for youngsters and students - NetBeans has opened up new spheres for students and youngsters like me and provide plenty of opportunities to contribute through plugins, community docs as well as mailing lists help us to interact with the best in business. What more can a newcomer ask?

NetBeans Community Docs Spotlight - Siegfried Bolz

Hello, Community!

Its time to put Spotlight on yet another contributor, whose exploration, led him to contribute docs to the community! This time we head towards Munich, Germany!

I'm talking about Siegfried Bolz, who has done two contributions;

1. Create reverse Ajax Web-Applications with DWR, GlassFish and NetBeans 6.1
2. Creating SOAP Web Services with NetBeans 6.0

We asked him some questions, and here's what he has to say;

What do you do?

I am working as a Java Software Developer for a mortgage financing company and I am the only one there, who is using NetBeans, all other developers are using Eclipse. :-( So i am trying to persuade them all. ;-)

When did you first start using NetBeans?

That was in spring 2007, i had to develop some Web Services with JAX-WS and was searching the Web for some tutorials with Eclipse. Luckily, i found some for NetBeans 5.5 . This was the beginning for me, to use NetBeans. First i missed some features from Eclipse like the cool Quick fixes, but when NetBeans v6.0 was released, this gap was closed.

What do you like best about NetBeans?

Hmmm, there are many things but my favourite feature is the great Web Service support. Unlike other IDE's, NetBeans is the first (and only?) one which supports JAX-WS and RESTful, and not only AXIS. In combination with GlassFish v2, it is very very easy to create reliable, secure Web Services. Many thanks to the NetBeans und GlassFish developer teams!

NetBeans Community Docs Spotlight: Kristian Rink

Hello all!

Its time for the NetBeans Community Docs Spotlight and this time we move to Dresden, Germany where we have Kristian Rink, who has been very active in the community with his documentation in English & German.



Here is what Kristian had to say to our Q & A:

What do you do?

I do work for a mid-sized company that acts as a "digital solution
provider" to customers in the building and construction industry (which
mainly is about centralized document management and workflow control).
As software engineer and "head-of-dev" I am into conception and
development of server-sided Java applications, but my job also involves
introducing and educating students in this field of work once in a
while. Ah yes, I'm a blogger as well (http://dm.zimmer428.net)... ;)

When did you first start using NetBeans?

For the very first time I dealt with NetBeans quite a while ago,
version 3.x or something like that I guess, while still at the
university, but didn't get to do any more meaningful things simply
because, these days, working with Java was just part of a semester
project we got finished rather quickly. When I got back to Java
development (and actually started earning money this way), I took a
crash-dive into Eclipse which I used for about five years. Switched to
NetBeans while in early 6.0 pre-releases just for the sake of checking
it out, and finally started using it exclusively as it seems to just
have increased my productivity in various ways.

What do you like best about NetBeans?

There are many things making NetBeans rather interesting (great
community, incredibly well-documented as an RCP, strong maven2 support,
always on "the very edge" of technologies in terms of Java and Java EE
versions, ...), but if I had to pick one, I'd say that NetBeans simply
is an IDE that helps getting the job done unobtrusively and without
getting into your way. Just fire it up and get work done, that's what a
good tool should be like.
