Who's Who?

Hello all,

This team has seen some changes in the recent past. James Branam, NetBeans Community Docs Manager (March 2007 - August 2009) had stepped down from this program on August 31st, 2009.

He had made an announcement as well, you may read it over his blog. To quote,

"After two and a half years of managing the NetBeans Community Docs program, I've decided to step down."

While James decided to step down, he passed the torch to another technical writer from his NetBeans Documentation Team, Jeff Rubinoff. So, let us give him a warm welcome and the cooperation, he may require to make the program, better for you and the community.

In the end, I would like you all to thank James for initiating this program and helping to increase the adoption of the NetBeans IDE through the documentation created for the community, by the community.

NetBeans Community Docs Survey

Today we (=the NetBeans Community Docs team) would like
to kindly ask you for input on our current and future doings:

Started in March 2007, the NetBeans Community Docs project has gone a long
way collecting and sorting pieces of documentation provided to the NetBeans
community solely by voluntary contributors from all around the globe. All
users involved into this process have done a great putting time and effort
into that project, and as a result, the impressive landmark of 300 user
contributed pieces of documentation has been reached in Februrary 2009.

However, sometimes things have to change, and so, by now we also want to
make some changes to the way NetBeans Community Docs project works. And for
that, being a 'community project' and thus not just maintained by the
community but also, in the content it collects, mainly aiming at providing
help and support to the community, we would like to know what the community
wants and needs before going any further. In near future, we want to make
NBCD more than ever an actively maintained, vivid 'community driven
knowledge base' directly addressing our users needs, adding our part to
helping people get the most out of NetBeans IDE.

For that, we would like to read your opinion. What do you like about NBCD so
far? What bothers you in using it in your everyday work? What kind of
content do you enjoy reading and using, and what would you like to see
improved as the project moves on? Take our survey now, take a chance to
tell us, to make 'the future NBCD' even more the community driven knowledge
base you would like to use and see.

Hi all,

Today I have a very important announcement to make. The NetBeans Community Docs program has a new Contribution Coordinator: Kristian Rink.

Kristian has been a very active participant in the program, and has also served as Evangelist. A native of Germany, Kristian has some excellent ideas for moving the program forward.

Please join me in congratulating Kristian and welcoming him to his new position.

I would also like to thank Varun Nischal, the program's former Contribution Coordinator, for a job well done. Under Varun's leadership, the program was able to reach new milestones, including the latest milestone of 300 contributions.

We all owe our thanks and congratulations to Varun.

Developing Jython Apps using NetBeans IDE

...is the first community-contributed tutorial on Python support in NetBeans 6.5 IDE, written by Joshua Juneau, NetCAT 6.5 Participant

Here's a brief overview of the tutorial;

Since Netbeans 6.5 has been released, Python and Jython support has been available via the nbPython plugin. There is quite a bit of documentation available for this plugin in various locations. In this article, I will tie together some of the different references for this plugin and I will show you how to generate a small Jython application which uses some Java libraries contained within an external JAR file.

Analysis: This states that nearly every month, 8 docs were contributed to our project, and there were 5-6 authors joining the project every month..

Year 2008

Contributions- 203 (12 Months)
Unique Authors- 60

Analysis: This states that nearly every month, 17 docs were contributed to our project, and there were nearly 5 authors joining the project every month..

Comparative Study

From the above figures, one can infer that in the year 2008, there was 62.56% increase in the no. of contributions.. However, the rate of authors joining the project remained the same..

What Next?

This is your project and you are the driving force, so if you have any suggestions for betterment of this project, let us know.. We hope to see the same enthusiasm again this year, wish you good luck and thank you for your contributions till date..

Year In Review: Blogs, Wikis, Evangelists and More...

So, 2 days left for New Year 2009 and everyone's in party mood, so are we. However, we want to end this year with a special review done by none-other-than James Branam, NetBeans Community Docs Program Manager.

Year 2008

2008 was a very successful year for the NetBeans Community Docs program, and I am proud to say that all of you played a role in its success. I especially would like to thank Contribution Coordinator Varun Nischal for his tremendous achievements and innovative leadership, both of which were vital factors in the growth of the program.

2008 also saw the appointment of Community Docs Evangelists, increased multi-language documentation, the publication of a regular newsletter, and a blog dedicated to the program. 2008 was also a good year for the program in terms of recognition. It was highlighted in several articles and as part of NetBeans 10th Birthday celebration.

Year 2009

2009 is nearly here, and the program will continue to evolve. We want to take the existing momentum and expand the program to reach a wider range of contributors. We also want to increase focusing on quality of contributions and adherence to existing style guides. Another challenge we look forward to engaging is creating a more purposeful documentation wish list and creating specialists for certain types of documentation.

On April 1, a new Contribution Coordinator will take the reins: Kristian Rink. A long time participant in the program, Kristian will bring new ideas to the program, building on the strong foundation that Amit Kumar Saha and Varun Nischal have established.

Happy New Year

I look forward to the new year and the challenges it will certainly bring. More importantly, I am proud to be working with such fine people as you all are, and I wish you a happy, healthy, and successful 2009.

13, 14, 15, 16... No, I am not counting anything, I am just figuring out the mystery behind this sequence of numbers..

Hubert A. Klein Ikkink has recently scored a hat-trick (Three Consecutive Weeks) of being recognized as Topmost Contributor of the weekly newsletter edition (#14, #15, #16) and that too within the same month. He has mainly focused on contributing Tips and Tricks.

You have all seen me blogging for more than a year now. Some people call me crazy, avid, passionate and/or highly active (hyper-active) blogger. Then, there were some who didn’t even bother reading my blogs OR commented negatively.

I never mind as I blog because I had developed an interest in it which made me passionate for blogging. Too, it helped me improve my writing skills, as last year I was new to blogging.

Me dedico generalmente al desarrollo de drivers de comunicaciones y visualizadores de AVL (tanto Web como de escritorio) para el hardware desarrollado en la compañia, y además estoy encargado de todo lo referente a SIG. Desarrollo principalmente en Java (usando NetBeans IDE) y PHP (uso particularmente el editor Notepad++, y en este momento estoy en plena migración a NetBeans).

Where do you live?

I live in Mendoza, Argentina.

What do you do?

Currently, working in a company dedicated to telecommunications called
R-Link. I dedicate it mostly to the development of communication
drivers and AVL viewers(both Web and desktop) for the hardware
developed in the company, and I also keeping everything that has to do
with GIS. Major developed in JAVA (using NetBeans IDE) and PHP (I
particularly like using Notepad++ editor, and I'm fully migrating to
NetBeans).

Previously, I worked as a developer for a company fully dedicated to
regional projects GIS. Also, I like to investigate the problems that I encounter in my daily work, and write (to the extent that it allows me time off) solutions which I
discovered on my blog or where to find or channel for doing so.

Besides the lure of being able to help others, really helps me to me, because I'm quite upset to investigate the same things twice :)

Howdy,

Guess what, we accomplish yet another milestone- we have now got 250 community-contributed documents!

It's been 10 days since NetBeans Official Birthday (October 26, 2008) and today, we have finally made it. So, we acknowledge our dearest contributors for their time and support. Thank you, thank you so much for contributing!

Reloading Documentation

As a result of a discussion that took place few weeks back on our mailing lists. Now, it's the right time to announce some major developments that were taking place under the hood for the common good.

Firstly,
Have a look at the Main contribution list at Community Docs;
http://wiki.netbeans.org/CommunityDocs_Contributions

Now, as you will note change in color of table headers, that's something new I discovered while exploring wiki.netbeans.org! They are actually sortable headers, you click any header and see it live. Its cool :-) Another thing to notice, the category mentioned in each row is click-able either pointing to Developer FAQs or newly created sub-level wikis..

Sub-level wikis..
Currently, community can look for tutorials, tips and tricks, screencasts and articles. Also, there are localized wikis (Spanish, German) being made in parallel to these English ones!

Consequences..
So, what would happen now, is that when you contribute a documentation, it gets first listed into the Main list as pointed out earlier. Also, the category to which it belongs to will be converted into a hyperlink, so as to point to the category-specific wiki listing several documentations falling under that category. Also, this makes it easier to locate community-contributed docs for specific details, just mentioned.

For instance,
Let's say there's a user who's new to NetBeans wants a tutorial/guide to know how to install NetBeans on Ubuntu, Fedora, etc.. We can direct him to the following wiki-page;
http://wiki.netbeans.org/NBCDTutorials and then, go to "Installation" section from Table of Contents.

In short, go to-
http://wiki.netbeans.org/NBCDTutorials#section-NBCDTutorials-Installation

How simple it becomes to actually find community contributed documentation :-)

Secondly,
We have reached a point where we can have the NetBeans Community Docs project in localized languages. So, we have setup the Community Docs in German and Spanish. These initiatives have been driven by our evangelists, Kristian and Aristides.

Also, in the respective localized setups, they have created localized guides for "Getting Started with NetBeans Docs" and "Tutorial template", so as the Spanish and German users can quickly get started with contributing documentations.

Thirdly,
Each and every table present in top-level and various sub-level wikis (we would now be maintaining) would have sortable headers.

Finally,
The Community Docs Wiki, would continue to aggregate localized and English wikis, however Spanish and German would only aggregate the respective localized docs. Note- data would first go into the Main list, then only rest parallel wikis and sub-level wikis would be updated..

You're in for a surprise, NetBeans Dream Team contributed 13 docs, comprising of tips & Tricks, Tutorials and Developer Faqs. Phew!

Trivia

This month, our program had 23 contributions, back-to-back record breaking months. Also, this was the second time, when we saw many Dream Team members contributed docs, instead of one. Also, we reached an important milestone- 200 docs!

So, I am dividing this particular blog entry into three parts, as every category has good number of contributions and its worth giving each category and respective authors acknowledgement separately. This entry would cover tips and Tricks.

We can start Jetty with the jetty:run command in NetBeans, but because of an issue for Windows users (see Issue 138116) we cannot shutdown Jetty from within NetBeans. We can of course start the Windows TaskManager and kill the process by hand, but wouldn't it be nice of we could just stop Jetty from within NetBeans?

Working with Cocoon 2.2 is a blessing compared to the previous versions. Cocoon 2.2 is now based on the Spring framework and uses Maven for the build process. Especially the dependency mechanism of Maven makes creating a new Cocoon application a lot easier. And if there is one IDE out there with superb Maven support than it is NetBeans.

It got started in English, however Kristian Rink, NBCD Evangelist, also the NetBeans Dream Team Member posted first ever German translation of our weekly newsletters.

During NetBeans B'day Bash,

Aristides Villarreal Bravo, NBCD Evangelist, one of the founding members and still a member of the NetBeans Dream Team, posted first ever Spanish translation of our weekly newsletters.

Email Subscriptions..

You can subscribe these feeds through email as well, for English (en_US) and for German (de_DE) or Spanish (es_ES). Those who have already subscribed, should consider staying with subscription for sometime and wait for further announcements.

If your code generates an uncaught exception at runtime, NetBeans will display a dialog box which can show the details of that exception to the user. This is a welcome alternative to simply crashing the application, and provided you have written solid code, your user should never see this dialog anyway.

Let's begin by stating that you probably do not need to know when other modules are loaded or unloaded. The module system takes care of dependency management for you, so your module should never be loaded unless all of its stated dependencies are loaded too.

I got a ClassNotFoundException or NoClassDefFoundError. How can I fix it?

The most likely explanation is that you have a problem in your dependencies. In order for a class in one module to reference a class/interface defined in another module, the following must be true:
The class/interface being referenced must be visible to the code using it, according to the normal Java visibility rules. This typically means that the class must be public, since package-private access across modules is impossible.
The package containing the class/interface must be exported (marked as providing an API visible to other modules).
The module containing the code which uses this class/interface must declare a dependency on the module which provides it.

Actually, you should be, as I am going to share something unique with you guys. So, why did I wrote "Heroes" as the title of this post?

Let me tell you, I am not talking about the famous TV series- "HEROES", ok..

I am talking about our "HEROES", the contributors to this documentation project- NetBeans Community Docs!

NetBeans Community Docs Heroes
I believe that, "People who spend time in saving others time", should be considered as heroes. I am really not aware how the world defines a Hero? There would be various ways to define a hero.

However, for our documentation project, we couldn't think beyond contributors as our heroes. They do spend a lot of time exploring NetBeans IDE inside-out, and from this experience, they tend to share a lot of information with a community of users (distributed around the world), in the form of documentation, which would really help the users save a lot of time!

Today, we want to acknowledge all of them, we have created a document enlisting all the contributors of our project, firstly classified on the basis of years, and then months- in which they joined us.

Catering to a wider audience

At the NetBeans Community Docs, we have seen a steady stream of flow of non-English docs over the past few months.

We now non-English speaking evangelists as well.

Today, we just take one step more to reach to the large non-English speaking NetBeans Community with a Google Translate Gadget (top right) on this blog. It will automatically allow you to view the page in any of the chosen language from the supported languages.

After going through docs last year, lets have a look what all the highly skilled NetBeans users have done this year :)

We are going to see contributions done by NetBeans Dream Team Members during the month of July, 2008!

When was the last time they contributed?
Long time back, in September 2007 by Wade Chandler. Surprising, well they were getting ready for the major role they played this year, NetBeans Innovator Grants! Ofcourse, you will find them anyhow on the mailing lists.

Comeback Month
Aristides Villarreal Bravo made a comeback, and he was back with a bang! Kristian Rink has been contributing since last year, and he was back as a new NetBeans Dream Team Member. Also, Wade Chandler made a comeback too!

What about April-June, 2007?
Guys, we didn't have any contributions during that period, our program was progressing slowly, yet steadily, and in July, we got another set of contributions by such members.

Not, to forget...
